Our first performance!
nice as pie dance theatre performed the first snippets of The Hotel at Blue Rooms on Thursday 15th October as part of the launch night of Bath Spa University's Business society Insparation. The evening was very successful, lots of laughter was had by all, and many cakes were scoffed by the audience! The feedback we received was very positive, and from our own experiences we were able to advise others on starting their own businesses. We are now in rehearsals to improve and expand the piece in preparation for our next performance at The Tobacco Factory, Bristol, Sun 15th Nov. Below are some pics from the evening, let us know your thoughts!
First Paid Education Work!
Hi guys, just a bit of an update!
nice as pie completed their first residency at a local primary school last week. It was a very successful residency and culminated in a short performance to the children's parents. It was a very productive and enjoyable experience, of which we hope to have more of with other schools.

Up and Coming Piece 'The Hotel'
In January 2009, nice as pie entered into the Launchpad scheme. A programme created and developed by Bath Spa University, the first in the country to create a scheme that incubates a company for professional development. nice as pie competed with 6 other very promising companies from Bath Spa. In May, nice as pie were selected to be one of the two winners of the scheme and subsequently went about creating their second piece.
Synopsis of 'The Hotel'
nice as pie dance theatre invites you to explore 'The Hotel', a curiously interactive and visually vibrant multi-sensory installation performance.
Mysterious, sensorial, witty and insightful, The Hotel explores and exposes the concept of the 'cinderella complex' through the unravelling stories of its residents.
'WE PAY LIP SERVICE TO THE IDEA THAT A WOMAN SHOULD BE EDUCATED AND CAPABLE, BUT THERE REMAINS AN UNSPOKEN BELIEF IN OUR
CULTURE THAT HAPPILY EVER AFTER COMES WITH A PRINCE' (Collette Dowling, 1981).
The company utilises and draws on the youthful femininity of its newly graduated members to produce a culturally relevant and thought provoking dance performance exploring the above subconsious belief that haunts women of all generations.
For ultimate guest satisfaction, The Hotel has employed a receptionist to escort guests around the complex, revealing the fractured existence of three individuals and their unconscious desire to find a modern day prince charming.
Boasting unusual, yet engaging audience interactivity and edgy physicality, nice as pie wish you a pleasurable experience, for at 'The Hotel', you don't just stay, you belong...

Company Key Aims

- Diminish boundary between performer and audience member
Touch and engage with audiences on a sensorial, intellectual and emotional level
Utilise and draw on the feminitity of company members
Create aesthetically stimulating and physically demanding dance
Produce culturally relevent and thought-provoking theatreDebut Piece 'Dogfight'
In June 2009 nice as pie dance theatre's debut performance 'Dogfight' was performed at Bath Spa University as part of the annual summer show 'The Works'.
Dogfight explored the theme of entrapment in the format of an audience interactive installation. Visually vibrant set encompassed the environment, allowing for audience members to meander through and interact with both the performers and the surroundings. The performance offered its participants sweet warm floral cups of fruit tea, helpings of traditional cakes, opportunities for involvement, such as moving bricks and ripping down wall paper to reveal performers.
The intention was to create a totally sensorial experience and heighten the feeling of entrapment on an individual and personal level.
Inspiration for this type of performance work was evoked from the perspective of late choreographer Alwin Nikolais who was of the opinion that
'man is no longer content to perceive his world through the sensory dominance of the eye and the ear...were not content to see and hear; we want to smell, we want to taste, we want to feel our whole relationship to the environment and world' (Warenek, R, 1981, http://www.warunek.com/).
Tour booker Mark Makin of Makin Projects commented after reviewing 'Dogfight', that the company is:
'clever, witty and resourceful in the way that they adapt their site-specific productions to a range of challenging spaces and in the way that they present themselves as a company. A very interesting, bright and sparky emerging company. Definitely ones to watch' (Makin, July 2009).
